MOBILE Ala. — Due to a rainy forecast on Sunday Appalachian State University baseball finished its weekend series on Saturday with a double header at Stanky Field. The Mountaineers (11-26, 4-14 Sun Belt) split the twin bill, winning game one, 6-5 in 10 innings, and dropping game two, 10-3.
Game One: App State 6, South Alabama 5 (10 innings)
The game was scoreless going into the fifth inning when the Mountaineer offense put four runs on the board. Matt Brill got the inning going with a double down the left field line followed by a single by Carson Jones and RBI doubles by Chandler Seagle and Brian Bauk. Michael Pierson then drove Bauk in with a sacrifice fly.
The Jaguars (24-13, 11-7 Sun Belt) plated four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and two walked batters by starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs.
The Apps took the lead back in the top of the eighth when Noah Holmes came across home plate on Brill's second double of the game.
With a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and two strikes USA's Jared Barnes singled up the middle to tie the game. Robert Whaley entered the game and got the Mountaineers out of the inning.
In the 10th, the Mountaineers would claim and hold the lead with Holmes again scoring the go-ahead run, this time on Brandon Burris's single through the left side.
Game two: South Alabama 10, App State 3
Appalachian started game two quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning. With two men on base, Brill doubled down the left field line and drove them both across the plate.
The Jaguars were quick to rally with their first batter hitting a home run over the right field wall. USA went on to score five runs on five hits and one Mountaineer error and never looked back.
The Mountaineers added a run in the top of the sixth on Jones' RBI single that brought Pierson across the plate, but South Alabama tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Appalachian is back action for a midweek game versus ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. on Tuesday.
