Baseball Completes Season Sweep of High Point
BOONE, N.C. — Six different players drove in runs and four pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs in Appalachian State University baseball's 8-3 win over High Point on Tuesday evening at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.

With the victory, Appalachian State (8-21) snapped an agonizing six-game losing streak and completed a season sweep of High Point (14-13). The Mountaineers beat the Panthers, 4-0, on March 3 in High Point, N.C.

Fifth-year senior Noah Holmes opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning and Appalachian State never trailed en route to its 14th win in the last 17 meetings with High Point.

Freshman Conner Leonard provided perhaps the biggest hit of the game with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning that turned a slim 3-1 lead into a more comfortable 5-1 margin.

The Mountaineers went on to stretch the advantage to 8-1 before the Panthers plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut it to 8-3. HPU threatened to pull even closer with two runners on base and two outs in the eighth but freshman Ryan Ross got App State out of the jam by coming out of the bullpen and inducing an inning-ending groundout.

Ross retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the victory.

Holmes led the Apps offensively by going 2-for-4 with a double to go along with his third homer of the season in the second. Grayson Atwood also homered and had two hits while Brandon Burris finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to help pace Appalachian's nine-hit attack.

In addition to Leonard, Holmes and Atwood combining to drive in four runs, Dillon Dobson, Michael Pierson and Chandler Seagle each had an RBI for the Mountaineers.

On the mound, freshman starter Reed Howell struck out seven and did not allow an earned run over 4.2 solid innings before giving way to Dallas DeVrieze, who earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. DeVrieze, a sophomore southpaw, evened his record at 2-2 on the season.

Josh Greene had three hits for High Point, which lost for only the fifth time in its last 17 games.

Appalachian State returns to action on Wednesday when it makes the short trip to Greensboro, N.C. to face North Carolina A&T. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Greensboro's historic War Memorial Stadium.
