Georgia Edges App State in Series Opener, 6-3
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia scored one run in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to snap a 3-3 tie and hand Appalachian State University baseball its fifth-straight loss, a 6-3 defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Foley Field.

Appalachian State (5-10) knotted the score at 3-3 on Dillon Dobson's two-out, two-strike, two-run home run in the top of the seventh but Georgia (11-5) retook a 4-3 lead on Skyler Weber's RBI single in the bottom of the frame. An inning later, the Bulldogs stretched the advantage to 6-3 on two-run triple by Nick King and the Mountaineers went down in order in the ninth to end the ballgame.

The defeat extended Appalachian State's longest losing streak of the season. The tough-luck Mountaineers have been outscored by a total of nine runs during the five-game skid and have not lost any of the games by more than three.

Things started out well for the Mountaineers on Tuesday, as they grabbed an early 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Dobson in the top of the first.

Behind strong pitching from freshman starter Reed Howell, the score remained 1-0 until Georgia's Keegan McGovern led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run.

In the sixth, the Bulldogs extended the lead to 3-1 on a solo homer by Zack Bowers and an RBI double by Mike Bell.

Georgia's first advantage of the game was short-lived, however, as Dobson lined a 1-2 pitch from UGA lefty Bo Tucker over the right-field wall for a two-run homer that tied the score at 3-3 with two outs in the top of the seventh. Dobson's blast was his team-leading third of the season.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, Weber gave the Bulldogs the lead right back in the bottom of the seventh before King added the two insurance runs in the eighth. That was more than enough for UGA closer Jared Cheek, who retired App State's final four batters to seal the win and pick up his fourth save of the season.

Jaylin Davis and Conner Leonard led Appalachian's eight-hit attack with two apiece while Dobson drove in all three of the Mountaineers' runs. Brandon Burris extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single in the third inning before leaving the game with a leg injury. His status is day-to-day.

In the finest performance of his young career, Howell surrendered just one run and struck out three in 4.2 solid innings but did not figure in the decision. Junior Caleb McCann was saddled with the first loss of his career after allowing Weber's go-ahead single in the seventh.

Appalachian State looks to snap the five-game skid on Wednesday when it closes the two-game mid-week series at Georgia. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the game can be seen live on SEC Network+.
