GREENVILLE, N.C. – Despite grabbing an early 1-0 advantage by taking the doubles point, Appalachian State University men's tennis was unable to hang on in a 4-3 loss at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (4-6) used victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the early edge over the Pirates (8-6), but ultimately dropped four of six singles matches and suffered their second loss of the weekend.
Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks earned a 7-5 in at No. 2 doubles before Trey Morris and Oliver Casey clinched the point with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. It was the third-straight win of the season for the Morris/Oliver duo, which began playing together against NJIT on Feb. 21.
In singles play, Casey came up big with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1, but the Apps dropped the next two singles matches as ECU was able to tie things up at 2-2.
Webster put the Mountaineers in the driver's seat with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 as App State came within a point of securing the victory.
The Pirates were able to rally from there and grabbed wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to complete the comeback and hand Appalachian State its second loss in as many days.
The Mountaineers return to action on March 9 when they face Northern Illinois in Orlando, Fla. as part of a three-match trip to the Sunshine State.
