SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite grabbing an early 1-0 lead via two wins in doubles play, Appalachian State University men's tennis was unable to hang on in a tough 4-3 loss at Wofford on Thursday at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers (3-3) earned doubles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but the Terriers (3-1) roared back in singles play to earn the victory over their former Southern Conference rival.
Trey Morris and Jan-Willem Kleynhans earned Appalachian's first doubles victory with a 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot. After Zach Bost and Oliver Casey fell at No. 1, the App State tandem of Jack Maddocks and Scott Webster clinched the point via a 7-6 victory at the No. 2 spot.
Singles play began with a Wofford victory at No. 2 as the Terriers tied the contest at 1-1, but Webster put Appalachian State up 2-1 when he earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4.
The Terriers knotted the match again at 2-2 with a win at No. 5 singles, but Maddocks gave the Apps a 3-2 advantage when he grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. Casey fell at No. 1 (6-2, 7-5) as Wofford yet again rallied to tie the score at 3-3.
In the decisive singles match at the No. 6 position, Morris won the first set by a 6-4 score, but fell by a 6-2 score in the second set and eventually lost the match after suffering a 6-4 loss in the third and final set.
The Mountaineers return to action on Feb. 14 when they head to Winthrop for a 12 p.m. matchup against the Eagles.
