ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite wins in three singles matches, Appalachian State University men's tennis dropped its seacond-straight, 4-3 decision in a loss at Winthrop on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (3-4) were able to push two singles matches to third sets, but could not climb out of an early hole against the Eagls (3-2).
Winthrop was able to seize early momentum when it snagged 8-6 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the first point. App State's No. 2 duo of Jack Maddocks and Scott Webster were able to grab a 9-7 win at No. 2, but Appalachian failed to secure a second doubles win.
In singles play, Oliver Casey grabbed a first set win at No. 1, but eventually fell by a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. Jan-Willem Kleynhans also snagged a win in his first set at No. 5, but also lost by a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Maddocks, Webster and Trey Morries earned wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, but Winthrop's win at the No. 2 spot would prove to be the difference as Appalachian State lost by the slimmest of margins.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 against NJIT. The match, which will be played once again in Rock Hill, S.C., is slated for a noon start time.
