After 11-straight games on the road to open the season, Appalachian State University baseball finally plays in front of a "home" crowd on Wednesday, albeit 85 miles down the road, when it hosts Campbell at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Tickets for Wednesday's game are just $10 and can be purchased online by clicking HERE or at the BB&T Ballpark gate beginning at 5 p.m. The game can also be seen live on App State TV and heard live on 1450 WATA AM in Boone and worldwide at appstatesports.com.
The game is Appalachian State's first at BB&T Ballpark, the four-year-old home of the Winston-Salem Dash, the high-A level affiliate of the Chicago White Sox that was named the 2010 Ballpark of the Year by baseballparks.com.
Wednesday's game at BB&T Ballpark has been declared Fred Robinette Day, in honor of the Yosef Club founder and longtime Appalachian State Director of Alumni Affairs who died on January 25 after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. A pregame ceremony will be held in tribute of the Mountaineer legend.
Appalachian State has played a grueling schedule to date, with seven of its first 11 games against nationally ranked teams and 10 of the 11 against programs from the five "power conferences" (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 and SEC), including a whopping nine games against members of the baseball-rich ACC and SEC. While the Mountaineers have managed just one win against the challenging slate, six of their 10 losses have been by two runs or less, including four one-run defeats.
Appalachian snapped a season-opening skid on Saturday with a convincing 4-1 victory over Michigan at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic in Cary, N.C. On Sunday, the Mountaineers were en route to an impressive win over host Notre Dame but squandered a 3-1 ninth-inning lead and lost an 11-inning heartbreaker, 4-3.
App State's demanding schedule continues on Wednesday when it takes on Campbell (9-3). The Camels have played 10 of their 12 games at home but own an impressive neutral-site victory over the SEC's Missouri last Wednesday at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary. CU went 49-10 a season ago but fell one game short of qualifying for an NCAA Regional when they were upset by Liberty in the Big South Tournament championship game. The Camels hosted last year's neutral-site matchup with Appalachian and defeated the Mountaineers, 11-6, in Thomasville, N.C.
True freshman Sean Mason will make the first start of his career on the mound for Appalachian State. The right-hander has allowed just one earned run in four appearances out of the bullpen for the Mountaineers this season. Campbell will counter with a true freshman of its own, left-hander Andrew Witczak (1-0, 3.94 ERA).
