HARRISONBURG, Va. - Appalachian State University field hockey fell to Kent State University 6-2 on Sunday morning in its first contest of the 2013 campaign in a neutral-site match in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Golden Flash (1-1) scored its first goal 27 minutes into the match off of a penalty corner by Jenna McHale. Kent State would go on to score two more times in the next 17 minutes, once at the 32:59 minute mark off the stick of Rebecca Lee and once at 44:50 minute mark by Alyssa McFerren.

Appalachian (0-1) found the net when junior forward Jessi Stuart scored an unassisted goal at the 50:20 mark, making the score 3-1.

Kent State kept the goals coming by scoring three more times on goals by Melanie Kahn, Alexis Madeira and Shannon Martin.

The Mountaineers struck one more time at the 64:01 mark with a goal off of a penalty corner from junior midfielder Dana Wetmore, but it was all the closer the Apps would get as they fell by a 6-2 final.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson spent all 70 minutes in goal, recording 21 saves on 27 shots while Jordyn Warren led the Mountaineers with a team-best four shots, three of which were on target.

Kent State finished with a 37-15 edge in shots including a 27-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Flash also received 14 penalty corners while the Apps had five.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow when they face Ball State in Harrisonburg at 11 a.m.
