Field Hockey Defeats Penn for Second-Straight Win

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Appalachian State University field hockey won its second-straight match, defeating the unbeaten Penn, 3-2 in overtime. The Mountaineers snapped the Quakers three-match win streak with its overtime defeat Sunday afternoon.
Penn would be the first to light up the scoreboard as freshman Elizabeth Hitti put the ball passed goalkeeper Sarah Anderson off an assist from the right side of the field, giving the Quakers an early 1-0 lead.
The Apps' wasted little time, knotting the score at 1-1, when they recorded a goal just four minutes later. The sophomore duo of Jessi Stuart and Jordyn Warren would combine for the goal when Stuart fed Warren a pass from the left side of the field, allowing Warren to net her third goal of the season.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie, with Penn out-shooting Appalachian, 7-3.
The Quakers took the lead for the second time of the match when Hitti found the stick of leading goal scorer Julie Tahan who fired a shot under the pads of Anderson, allowing Penn to take the 2-1 advantage.
With only four minutes left of regulation Stuart got inside the circle and was able to dribble a shot passed goalkeeper Carly Sokach, tying the match for the second time at 2-2.
The Quakers were able to fire off one more shot before the end of the half, but it would be blocked by an Appalachian defender, sending the match into the first overtime of the season for either team.
Stuart's goal gave the Mountaineers all the energy they would need leading into overtime.
Anderson made a huge save in the cage when Tahan found an open shot just thirty-five seconds into overtime.
Appalachian capitalized on its only shot in overtime, as Casey Lammando found a loose ball inside the circle and put it passed Sokach for her second goal in the past two matches.
The goal allowed the Mountaineers to go on to a 3-2 sudden death victory, handing the Quakers its first loss of the 2012 season.
"I am very proud of the team effort today," said head coach Brandi Alexander Kist, "Even when we were down a goal we fought and came back twice to tie it up and take it into overtime. The team stayed focused, despite a physical game and we played together. We spent a lot of time this week at practice on taking shots and scoring and that translated into what we were able to do today."
The win is the second straight for Appalachian and ties the all-time series with Penn at 1-1.
With the win the Apps' improve to 2-3 overall on the season, while Penn falls to 3-1 overall on the season.
Appalachian State will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Wake Forest for its first night match of the season. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
