Field Hockey Suffers Loss to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - Appalachian State University field hockey suffered a 8-1 loss to Richmond on Saturday at Crenshaw Field.

The Spiders came out strong in the first half with Samantha Ostoich scoring off of a rebounded shot in the ninth minute of the match. Richmond continued to find the net, scoring three more times in the first with goals from Blair Kline, Rebecca Barry and Kelly Quinn.

The Mountaineers finally got on the board when Lindsay Amador scored an unassisted goal from the right side at the 30:16 minute mark.

The Spiders would strike one more time before the half with a goal from Chelsea Davies to make the score 5-1.

Richmond continued its dominant performance in the second, finding goals from Davies, Kimberly Sportack and Taylor Deitrick.

The Apps would not respond, dropping the match with a final score of 8-1.

The Mountaineers were outshot 35 to six and had four penalty corners to the Spiders' eight.

Caroline Phillips led the team in shots with four, while Hanna French added one. Goalkeepers Sarah Anderson and Cristina Ceppi split time in the goal with Anderson recording five saves and Ceppi tallying seven.

Appalachian returns to action tomorrow when they take on VCU at 1 p.m.
