BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey
dropped its home opener to the University of Delaware, 2-1 this afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The Mountaineers were the first to strike when they earned a
penalty corner just 10 minutes into the match. Senior Casey Lammando dished a
pass to sophomore Dana Wetmore off the corner and Wetmore found the back of the
cage from the top of the circle, giving Appalachian the 1-0 lead.
Delaware wasted no time knotting the score at 1-1 as Clare O'Malley netted a Blue Hen goal just 17 second later.
The score remained
tied at 1-1 through the remainder of the first half, as Delaware outshot App
State 5-4.
The Blue Hens scored the final goal to notch
the win at the 51:57 mark of the match when Hannah Pepper fired a shot from the
left side of the cage off of a penalty corner.
The Apps looked as if they would knot the score
late in the game, but the goal was called back and Delaware went on to a 2-1
victory over the Mountaineers.
Wetmore led the way for Appalachian with three shots on
goal, while sophomore Jessi Stuart recorded two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson suffered the loss in net,
saving eight shots on the afternoon. Anderson's record falls to 2-6 overall on
the season.
With the loss Appalachian State falls to 2-6 overall, while
Delaware improves to 4-6 overall.
App State will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 23 when they
open up NorPac play against Davidson at home. The match is slated to start at 1
