Field Hockey Looks to Continue Win Streak

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey travels to Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 14 to take on the Demon Deacons in its first night match of the season before traveling to Davidson to take on VCU on Sunday, Sept. 16 in a neutral site match.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

The Apps went 2-0 last week, picking up its first two victories against Saint Louis and Penn. Appalachian is now 2-3 overall on the season.

Appalachian saw scoring across the board as five Mountaineers netted goals on the week. Senior Casey Lammando had a multiple goal week as she notched one in each match, including the match-winner in overtime against previously undefeated Penn.

Freshman Caroline Phillips picked up her first points of her collegiate career, having a hand in each of the three goals the Black and Gold scored against Saint Louis. Phillips scored the first goal of the match and fed sophomore Dana Wetmore and Lammando passes to pick up two assists on the day.

Wetmore and sophomore Jessi Stuart each found the back of the net for their first goals of the 2012 season for Appalachian. Wetmore scored the goal that would be the match winner against Saint Louis and Stuart netted a goal late in the second half against the Quakers to knot the score and send the match into overtime.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson picked up her first two collegiate wins as she made 15 saves on the week, including a career-high 10 against Saint Louis. Anderson had a key save stopping the only shot that Penn was able to get off in overtime and boasted a .789 save percentage on the week.

Phillips and Anderson garnered NorPac East honors after their efforts in last week's matches. Phillips was named co-Rookie of the Week, along with Liberty's Natalie Barr, while Anderson earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Anderson currently ranks second in the NorPac with 36 saves on the season and 7.20 saves per match.

SCOUNTING THE RAMS

VCU has matched the best start in school history to begin its 2012 campaign, as the Rams started the season with a 4-0 record and look to build upon that this upcoming weekend against Davidson. VCU has not seen a start this good since 2009, when they also started off 4-0.

Senior Haley McBee leads the charge for the Rams, scoring four goals and notching two assists. McBee has recorded a point in all four of VCU's matches including a multi-goal match against Missouri State.

The Rams defeated NorPac rival Longwood in dramatic fashion, picking up a 2-1 overtime victory with a Kelsey Scherrer goal.  Scherrer has three goals, including two match-winners and two assists, with a .643 shots on goal percentage

Junior Emily Soares rounds out the scoring for VCU, netting two goals, while four other Ram's have each recorded one.

Goalkeeper Megan Botteri has been the only keeper to see time in the cage for VCU. Botteri has only allowed five goals in four matches for a 1.53 goals against average and a .828 saves percentage.

The Rams will take on Davidson on Friday, Sept. 14 before the match-up against the Mountaineers.

No. 13 Wake Forest comes into Friday's match with a 2-3 overall record, after falling to Northwestern, 5-2, on Tuesday. The Demon Deacons have yet to play an away match as they have played all seven matches of the 2012 campaign on its home field.

The Demon Deacons have played two overtime matches this season, posting a 1-1 record in those contests. Wake Forest fell to Iowa, 3-2, before defeating Duke, 3-2, in double overtime.
