BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey lost an offensive fight as they were defeated by Longwood, 5-4 in its senior day match this afternoon.

The first half of the match was an offensive battle as six goals were scored between the two teams.

The Lancers took an early 1-0 lead over the Apps as they scored just 11 minutes into the match when Jessica Diaz scored her eighth goal of the season alone inside the circle.

Longwood extended its lead to two when Stacey de Grandhomme capitalized on a corner from the top of the circle with a double assist from Jennifer Burris and Brylee Despinis.

Freshman Lindsay Amador found the back of the net for her first career goal when Casey Lammando dished a pass off of a penalty corner, bringing App State within one of LU.

The Lancers continued its offensive strike as they scored just two minutes later when Christina Verhulst found herself alone against the keeper, allowing Longwood to take the 3-1 lead.

Appalachian State looked to score as they would get the ball up the field quickly in the 27^th minute of the half but were unable to score as Caroline Phillips shot was blocked by a Longwood defender.

The Mountaineers continued to battle back as Lammando netted her first goal of the afternoon when Dana Wetmore shot from the top of the circle and Lammando was able to get a stick on it for the goal.

Longwood's Hollie MacDonald put the Lancers up by two when she scored her first goal of the season off a strike from the top of the circle, making the score 4-2 to end the first half of play.

App State outshot LU 7-6 in the first half and were able to draw five penalty corners compared to Longwood's one.

Lammando was the first to light up the scoreboard in the second half of the match as she found the ball in a scramble off a penalty corner. The Hummelstown, Pa. native notched her fourth goal of the season to bring the Apps within one of the Lancers for third time on the afternoon.

Longwood's Kim Ruiter found the back of the net for the game-winning goal when she fired a shot from the top of the circle off a pass from Burris on a penalty corner.

The Mountaineers found the net one last time as Lammando clinched her first career hat trick, when she tipped in a shot from Wetmore for the second time on the afternoon but the goal would not be enough as the Apps fell, 5-4.

Appalachian State dominated the Lancers as they were able to draw 12 penalty corners compared to Longwood's three. The Lancers outshot the Apps 17-15 as they fired off 11 shots in the second half compared to App States eight.

Goalkeeper Sarah Anderson suffered the loss in net, saving eight shots and bringing her season total to 101, while Lammando led the way for the Apps with her first career hat trick and adding one assist on the afternoon. Amador picked up her first career goal for the Black and Gold, while Wetmore had two assists.

With the loss Appalachian falls to 2-10 overall on the season and 0-4 in the NorPac, while Longwood improves to 3-11 overall on the season and 2-1 in the NorPac.

Appalachian State will be back in action when they travel to Oxford, Ohio on Friday, Oct. 12 for a match against Miami. The match is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
