Appalachian State University field hockey team prepares for its second weekend
on the road as it plays two NorPac matches. The Mountaineers will take on
Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Radford
on Sunday, Oct. 21.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
The Apps split its weekend matches as they fell to Miami,
9-1 before earning a 2-0 shutout over Ball State. The win was the third of the
season for Appalachian, giving them more wins than last season and bringing
their overall record to 3-11.
Senior Lesley Thomas
notched the Apps only goal in the 9-1 loss to Miami and had four shots on the
weekend. Freshman Hanna French
clinched the match-winning goal as she scored early in the second half of play
against Ball State off a pass from senior Casey Lammando, earning French NorPac East Rookie of the Week
honors for notching the game-winner. Sophomore Dana Wetmore extended the Black and Gold lead to two when she
fired a shot that would find the back of the net from 10 yards out.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson picked up her first career shutout as she made
seven saves against the Cardinals. Anderson currently leads the NorPac with 112
saves and is tied for seventh in the nation with eight saves per match.
Lammando and Wetmore have led the offense for Appalachian,
each scoring five goals on the season, while Lammando has dished out five
assists for 15 total points and Wetmore has two assists for 12 points. Five
Mountaineers have notched multiple goals on the season and two have over a .500
shots on goal percentage.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Liberty currently holds a 9-2 overall record and a 2-1
record in the NorPac as it comes off a one-match weekend, defeating Radford,
4-0.
The Flames defeated Longwood in its mid-week NorPac match
2-0, as Sarah Gipe notched the game-winner.
Gipe leads the Flames with 11 goals on the season and
tallying one assist for 23 points. Gipe has earned NorPac East Offensive Player
of the Week once this season, while Natalie Barr has posted 16 points on the
season with six goals, four assists and two defensive saves naming her NorPac
East Offensive Player of the Week once and NorPac East Rookie of the Week once.
Hannah Doherty has put up 13 points this season, while Helen
Dootlittlehas notched 11 points with four goals and three assists.
The Flames have seen scoring from ten players on its roster,
including seven with multiple goals. Both goalkeepers have seen action this
year for Liberty as Mallory Cuccio carries a 4-1 in one record with 17 saves,
while Brooke Morley has seen more time between the pipes with a 5-4 overall
record and 48 saves. Morley has been named NorPac East Defensive Player of the
Week once for her efforts in the cage with one shutout, while Cuccio has
garnered two shutouts on the season.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
Radford has struggled offensively through its first 14
matches, as they have only been able to pick up one win in the 2012 campaign.
The Highlanders only win of the season came over Appalachian, when the Apps
fell in a heartbreaking 3-2 match in double overtime.
Stacey Mackintosh leads the way for RU with 11 points on the
season. Mackintosh has found the back of the net five times, while Jana Bayer
has netted three goals and dished out one assist. Marianna Parker and Paige
Doughty have each found the net twice for the Highlanders and Sydney Myrdal has
scored one goal.
Sidney Encarnacion has started all 15 games for the
Highlanders between the pipes, posting a .681 save percentage with 113 saves on
the season.
WHAT'S NEXT
Appalachian State will return to Boone for one final home
NorPac match against Liberty. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Kidd
Brewer Stadium.
