OXFORD, Ohio -
Appalachian State University field hockey suffered a 9-1 loss to Miami
University in a non-conference match.
The Mountaineers fell behind early in the match as the
Redhawks scored just under 13 minutes into play. Miami's Alyssa Logan would give
the Redhawks a 3-0 advantage over the Apps when she scored two quick goals
within a minute of each other just before the first half came to a close.
Miami would take the 3-0 lead into halftime as they outshot
Appalachian 14-3 and drew seven penalty corners compared to the Mountaineers
one.
Senior Lesley Thomas
scored Appalachian's only goal of the match when Caroline Phillips led her with a pass for a breakaway. Thomas would
find the back of the net for the second time this season and bring the Apps within
two of Miami.
The Redhawks answered right back as the scored less than a
minute later when Emily Gruesser netted her sixth goal of the season.
Logan would notch a hat trick at the 53:23 mark of the match
when she found the ball in a scramble in front of the net, allowing Miami to
take the 5-1 lead over Appalachian.
Olivia Miller scored for the first time in the match at the
55:34 mark when she found herself alone against the keeper. Angela Amon
extended the Redhawk lead to 7-1 when she slid in behind the keeper on the left
side of the net for the goal.
Miami took the 8-1 lead when the Mountaineers scored an own
goal late in the second half. Miller clinched her second goal of the match with
just seven minutes left of play, giving the Redhawks the 9-1 victory over
Appalachian.
The goalkeeper duo of Sarah Anderson and Cristina Ceppi each played an even 35 minutes in the match.
Anderson posted eight saves, while Ceppi had one. Thomas led the way for the
Apps with one goal, while Phillips recorded an assist and sophomore Jordyn
Warren put one shot on goal.
With the loss Appalachian State falls to 2-11 overall on the season, while Miami improves to 8-8 overall on the season.
Appalachian will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 14 when
they conclude their road trip north in Muncie, Ind to take on Ball State. The
match is slated to start at noon.
