Wrestling Wins Thriller Over The Citadel, 21-16

CHARLESTON, S.C. Chris Collura defeated Nick LaFevre 3-2 in overtime in the last match of the day to clinch a 21-16 win for Appalachian State University wrestling over The Citadel Sunday afternoon in Charleston.

ASU won its fifth match in a row and improves to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference.  The Citadel drops to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon.

With the match starting at 149, the 141 pound match was the final one of the day.  With the score deadlocked at two after three periods, Collura earned a point in overtime to earn the 3-2 win and the Mountaineer victory.

Appalachian started the match with a victory, as Savva Kostis earned a 9-8 decision over Derek Royster.  The Bulldogs quickly tied the score with a Turtogtokh Luvsandorj decision over Chip Powell Kyle Blevins gave the Apps the lead back in the first of four lead changes with a 3-1 decision over Pierre Frazille at 165.

At 174, the Bulldogs' J.C. Oddo got a six-point win when Carter Downs couldn't finish the match due to an ankle injury in the third period.  The win gave The Citadel a three-point lead but Austin Trotman tied the score with a 9-5 decision over Kelby Smith.

The Mountaineers got just one pin on the day, but it was a big when Dylan Temple pinned Justin Sparrow with just five seconds remaining in the second period to give ASU a 15-9 lead.

The Citadel retook the lead with back-to-back wins by Odie Delaney and Richard Alarcon for a 16-15 lead.

Jacob Earp put the Black and Gold back on top with a 3-1 decision at 133 to set up the clincher for Collura.

With their wins at 165 and 184 respectively, Blevins and Trotman have won eight matches in a row.
