Women's Track and Field Finishes Second at SoCon Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – Appalachian State women's track took home second place at the 2010 SoCon Indoor Championships. Despite several strong individual performances, the Mountaineers could not maintain their day one lead and were overtaken by Western Carolina, who totaled 174.5 points to the Apps' 122.

Senior Ashley McKiver claimed her first individual conference championship for the Mountaineers Friday in the 60m dash. The High Point native posted a time of 7.62 to edge Western Carolina's Felicia Paulding. McKiver also contributed points in the 200m dash, finishing sixth with a time of 25.46.

Senior Julie Ward earned a second-consecutive indoor pole vault title for the Apps. Ward cleared 11-7.75 on her first attempt, to edge teammate Ashley Beale who cleared the height on her second attempt. Beale also took home all-conference honors for her second-place performance.

Senior Danielle Thorpe also scored a second consecutive SoCon crown in the triple jump. The Durham native posted a season-best mark of 40-9 to take home first place.

Junior Kiara Crutchfield earned all-conference honors in the 60m hurdles with a career-best time of 8.83 to finish behind Samford's Morgan Tyler and Georgia Southern's Jasmine Billings.

A day after winning the 3000m conference championship,Trinity Foreman was named SoCon Freshman of the Year after a fourth-place finish in the mile with a time of 5:06.71. Foreman was also a member of the third-place distance medley relay team that included Dani Reese, Asia Dunlap and Hannah Parks. Parks also added points for the Mountaineers in the mile run, just missing a personal-best time with 5:07.20 effort to earn a sixth-place finish.

Sophomore Kelsey Hanger also turned in a strong performance for the second consecutinve day for the Mountaineers. After placing sixth in the 3000m run on Thursday, Hanger posted a personal-best time of 18:04.97 in the 5000m run to earn a eighth place finish. Hanger's time Friday topped her previous best by over 20 seconds.

Freshman Gayshawna Watkins also collected her second all-conference honor in as many days for the Mountaineers. A day after claiming a third-place finish in the shot put, the Forest City, N.C. native followed with another third-place spot in the weight throw with a toss of 50-01.25. Watkins was also named to the all-freshman team.

Junior Nadia Liriano turned in a season-best time of 58.94 in the 400m dash to earn an eighth-place finish for the Mountaineers. Liriano also ran a leg on the 4x400m relay team that included Asia Dunlap, D'Shawrna McLucas and Lynda Hiller. The 4x400m team's effort of 3:58.53 was good for a fourth-place finish.
