GREENVILLE, S.C. - Aubrey Edens allowed just one run over eight innings and
Chris Alessandria drove in three runs as Appalachian State University baseball won the game and series from Furman, 4-1.
Alessandria led off the second inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on a pair of base hits before scoring the first run of the game on a double play.
Following the run, Furman's (11-16, 5-10 SoCon) Barry Benton retired 13-straight batters as the Paladins evened the score with a run in the bottom of the third.
Wes Hobson broke up the streak with a two-out single in the top of the sixth and moved to third on
Isaac Harrow's double down the first-base line.
Chris Alessandria then drove both players home with a line-drive single to center field to give the Mountaineers (13-16, 5-11) a 3-1 advantage.
The Apps tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning as
Ryan Arrowood led off with a bunt single and advanced on hits by
Rand Smith and Hobson before scoring on a ground out by Alessandria.
Alessandria, Hobson and Smith each had two hits in the game as Smith extended his hitting steak to 18 games. The senior had eight hits on the weekend as ASU won its first Southern Conference series of the season.
Edens allowed just six hits and one unearned run over eight innings of work for ASU. He fanned five batters and walked two in the winning effort, as he moved to 2-2 on the year.
Zach Quate then entered in the ninth to close out the game. He allowed just one hit and struck out a batter to earn his third save of the season.
Appalachian takes on Tennessee in Knoxville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Samford next weekend.
