STATESBORO, GA.- Appalachian State University volleyball suffered a dissapointing loss Saturday afternoon coming at the hands of Georgia Southern, as the Mountaineers fell to an impressive Eagle squad 3-0. With the loss ASU drops to 9-14 on the season and 5-4 in SoCon action, while GSU improves to a stout 16-8 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
The two squads battled back and forth in first set play, with two early attack errors by Georgia Southern giving Appalachian the 2-0 advantage. The set was knotted once more at 10 all, with Maggie Seeds and Kelsey Kuehner pacing the attack.
Unfortunately for the Black and Gold it was all GSU from there on out as three kills by Lauren Claybaugh and two by Sarah Gildersleeve earned GSU a 17-14 lead. The closest ASU could cut it was three points, at the 23-20 mark, but it was not enough ast the Eagles notched a 25-22 first set victory.
Appalachian was unable to get things going in the second set, despite hanging with GSU early, tying the set at the five all mark. A 16-5 Georgia Southern run put the set out of reach for the Mountaineers as the Eagles were able to notch a 21-10 advantage. ASU struggled offensively and errors proved to be costly, and GSU rolled to a 25-14 second set win.
The Mountaineers would not go away quietly, in the third and what would be final set, as the two teams traded leads up until the 14 all mark, with Lauren Swecker, Becca Norris and Kuehner all chipping in points.
After the scored was tied at 14 all, GSU scored four straight points to grab an 18-14 lead and never looked back, as four straight attack erros by ASU gave the GSU the 24-16 lead. The Eagles went on to notch a 25-16 third set and 3-0 match win.
Offensively, Maja Jechorek and Kuehner paced the Apps with eight kills each, while Claybaugh had a match-high 10 kllls.
The Apps look to rebound as they take on Davidson, Sunday October 25 at 2 p.m. in Belk Arena.
