CHARLESTON, S.C. - Appalachian State University fell in three sets against College of Charleston in the regular season finale, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21 on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (7-25, 3-15 SoCon) fell into a 7-1 hole in the first set and were seemingly unable to fully climb out. The Cougars (24-6, 17-1) extended the advantage to 10 points at 18-7 and resisted small Appalachian rallies to finish the set off with a 25-18 win.
Four players had two kills each in the opener, including
Becca Norris, who led the Apps with nine kills in the match. The junior also added two of ASU's seven blocks for the afternoon.
The second set was much closer as the teams stayed close and found themselves tied at 15-15. From there, CofC went on a 4-0 run and put the set out of reach as the home team was content to trade points the rest of the way en route to a 25-19 win.
Maja Jechorek finished second on the team with seven kills in the match, including three in the second set. The outside hitter added eight digs, a team-best three blocks and an assist.
Heather Kale had three of ASU's four aces in the match and finished as the team leader with 11 digs. Senior
Charissa Clearman had 11 assists , a kill and an assist in the match while classmate
Carla Durham finished the match with five kills and two blocks.
Trailing by two sets after the intermission, Appalachian pushed ahead early to take a 4-2 lead. The advantage would soon disappear, however, as the SoCon South Division champions tied the set at 5-5 and 6-6 before taking a 12-9 lead. Four more kills from Norris kept the Apps close and helped the team erase a deficit to tie the match a fifth time at 16-16. ASU made four costly attack errors following the tie, which allowed Charleston to regain enough momentum to put the match away at 25-21.
ASU finishes the regular season tied for fifth in the SoCon North division with Western Carolina. The league championship, featuring the top four teams from each division, will be held in Greensboro, N.C. next weekend.
