BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball remains in Boone for its final non-conference tilt of the season with a 1 p.m. tipoff against Montreat Saturday, January 14. The game is the second of a three-day homestand for the Mountaineers with Chattanooga visiting the Holmes Center on Monday. ASU comes into the game after a convincing victory over Western Carolina on Monday before a nationally televised audience. The 68-53 victory ended a two-game slide for the Mountaineers. Saturday is the first meeting between the two schools separated by just 88 miles. Appalachian is 12-0 under Fancher against non-Division I programs. Montreat is an NAIA institution that competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). ASU is 43-9 against current members of the AAC. All nine losses have come against Milligan. Only one of those losses came after 1956. The Cavaliers bring an 8-7 overall record into today's game after falling, 96-68, at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday evening. ASU is the third of four SoCon programs on the Montreat schedule as the squad lost to Western Carolina, 76-59, on November 30. The Cavaliers visit Elon on January 18. The Cavaliers are under the direction of eighth-year head coach Bill Robinson and are averaging 73.5 points per outing this season. The team features four players averaging double digits in scoring with Tim Lewis' 15.4 points per outing leading the way. Inside, Noble Anthony is averaging 12.3 points to go with his 8.3 rebounds per game. Montreat has been strong from three-point range this season, shooting .389 with three regular players shooting 40 percent or better from behind the arc. Montreat's associate head coach, Jonathan Bennett has Appalachian ties, serving as a graduate assistant under Buzz Peterson from 1996-98. The Apps will hope for the resurgent play of its post players again after Jeremy Clayton and Doug McLaughlin-Williams both posted their second career double-doubles to lead ASU to a 68-53 victory over Western Carolina on January 9. Clayton's double-double was his second in three games. Following the Montreat contest. ASU will be back in action on Monday to face 2005 SoCon Champion and preseason North Division favorite Chattanooga. Tipoff against the Mocs in the Holmes Center is slated for 7 p.m.
