ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Appalachian State University baseball erased a 5-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the sixth inning and received six scoreless innings from its bullpen to defeat UNC Asheville 6-5 Wednesday afternoon at wet and cold Greenwood Field.
Appalachian (4-14) trailed 5-1 heading into sixth, but batted around, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead.
Luis Arce and
Joey Robinson got the rally started with run-scoring singles, including a two-run base hit to left field by Arce. However,
Julian Brown collected ASU's biggest hit of the day, as he legged out an infield single with two away in the frame to plate the tying and go-ahead runs.
In addition to the five-run sixth, the key to the come-from-behind victory was the work of Mountaineer relievers
Brian Caudill and
Taylor Craig. The southpaws combined to hold UNCA (4-11) off the scoreboard for the final six innings of the ballgame. Caudill moved to 1-2 on the season by allowing just two hits and striking out two in four innings of work, while Craig turned in two innings of two-hit relief to earn his first save of the season.
Starter
Scott Clark turned in a solid performance, allowing four hits and two earned runs over three innings, but Appalachian committed four of its six errors in the third stanza to lead to three unearned Bulldog tallies.
Brown and
Jimmy Mathias recorded three hits apiece to lead the Mountaineers at the plate.
After spending its first 18 games of the season on the road, Appalachian finally opens its home slate when it welcomes Wofford to Red Lackey Field for a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend. The set begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
