Appalachian State University women?s basketball opens its 2003-04 Southern Conference slate when it travels to conference rivals Georgia Southern and College of Charleston this weekend. Appalachian takes on GSU at 7 p.m. Saturday in Statesboro, Ga. before clashing with C of C at 7 p.m. Monday in Charleston, S.C. Appalachian (1-3) rides a bit of momentum into the conference openers, as it recorded its first win of the season Wednesday evening, an 86-63 romp over in-state foe High Point. ASU broke out of an early season slump in the victory, going 31-of-60 from the floor (.517) after shooting just .371 in its first three contests of the season, all losses. However, collecting a victory in the SoCon opener will not come easy, as Appalachian has lost seven-straight to Georgia Southern, including all three contests a season ago. GSU knocked off the Mountaineers 71-64 in Statesboro, 77-67 in Boone and 82-71 in a thrilling overtime contest in the first round of the 2003 SoCon Tournament. ASU?s last win over the Eagles came on Jan. 8, 2000 by a score of 76-66 in Boone. The Mountaineers? have also lost six in a row in Statesboro, with their last win at GSU coming on Jan. 25, 1997 by a 95-80 margin. Georgia Southern, which was picked to finish fourth in the 2003-04 SoCon preseason polls, leads the all-time series with Appalachian 19-10. Despite dropping three of its last four versus College of Charleston, Appalachian leads the all-time series with the Cougars by a slim 9-8 margin. A season ago, the two squads split their two meetings, with ASU collecting an 80-69 decision in Boone on Jan. 13 and C of C gaining revenge by defeating the Apps 65-60 Feb. 15 in Charleston. Appalachian is 3-3 all-time at C of C, but has not won at John Kresse Arena since defeating the Cougars 84-70 on Jan. 15, 2001.
