A native of Senoia, Ga.,
Claire Carson is an outfielder on the App State softball team and a political science major at App State. She's also one of 50 Appalachian Student Ambassadors on campus.
For our Student-Athlete Spotlights series, let's get to know Claire a little better:
Q: What do you do as a Student Ambassador?
A: "We work with the Office of the Chancellor, University Admissions, the Alumni Association. There are also outreach events such as the Nearly Naked Mile, which raises money and clothes for the local homeless population. There's the annual food drive on campus that works with the Hunger and Health Coalition, so the group is doing a lot of great things in the community, on campus, and I'm really excited to be a part of it."
Q: How did you get interested in being part of that group?
A: "I'm really involved in athletics, obviously, but I can always be more involved in both the Boone community and, outside of athletics, the student body. So it's just kind of getting out of my comfort zone and getting more involved in the school in other ways."
Q: How does majoring in political science shape some of those interests?
A: "Political science is a lot about human interaction and just analyzing situations and coming up with solutions, so I think that can be really beneficial in my position as a student ambassador."
Q: Coming from Georgia, what sold you on App State?
A: "Just the community. When I came here on my visit, I didn't really know a lot about it and being in Boone. I love the atmosphere. It's beautiful, obviously, but the coaches and the way they treat everyone, it's like family here. When I saw the team and how they interact with each other and how they all really love each other, I just wanted be part of it."
Q: Now that you've got to experience it as a player, what has it been like?
A: "It's been amazing. I mean, I spend all my time with them. All these girls on the team are my best friends, so I'm so thankful for the relationships I've built here."
Q: Is it too early to ask what you'd like to do when you're done playing softball?
A: "I would like to go to law school or pursue my Ph.D. in political science."
Q: What are your favorite food spots in Boone?
A: "Definitely Wild Craft. That's my favorite. It's so good. And CoBo for sure."
Q: What's your favorite thing to do in Boone that's not related to athletics?
A: "I think my favorite activity is just to go to a coffee shop. There's so many coffee shops around here. I like to chill, drink coffee, read to book, do my homework."
