BOONE, N.C.- Capping off a three-game road swing, Appalachian State University women's basketball puts its six-game winning streak to the test, as the Apps host Western Carolina Monday evening in another important Southern Conference match-up. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Center.
About the Apps: The Mountaineers, winners of six-straight contests, are coming off a 19-point win over SoCon foe Elon. The victory marks the season sweep for ASU, and keeps the Mountaineers undefeated on the road against conference opponents.
It wasn't until the second half that the Apps were able to pull away from a chippy Phoenix team. A 16-2 run to close out the game was the difference-maker, with the Black and Gold executing when it counted and hitting key free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Chakeitha Weldon scored a game-high 16 points against Elon, while both
Courtney Freeman and
Kelsey Sharkey were impressive as well, each recording their first double-doubles. Five Mountaineers finished the contest in double-figures scoring, while
Courtney Freeman and Sharkey each grabbed a game-high 13 boards apiece.
Overall, freshman
Ashlen Dewart still paces ASU on the offensive front, averaging 14.6 points per game, while
Sam Ramirez chips in 11.8 as well. On the glass,
Anna Freeman hauls in a team-best 8.5 rebounds per game, while Dewart grabs 5.5.
Watching Western Carolina: Western Carolina is 4-19 overall and 3-11 in conference play. WCU is 1-11 away from the Ramsey Center and 1-6 against SoCon foes on the road.
The Lady Catamounts are coming off a resounding 30-point victory over Furman on February 6, snapping a nine-game losing streak. The victory, marked Western Carolina's first road win of the 2009-10 season and gave WCU the season sweep of Furman. In the contest, Heather Swayne came off the bench to pour in a season-high 15 points.
With just one other conference win on the season (two against Furman), WCU defeated Wofford back on November 20, winning 71-65.
Offensively, Emily Clarke is the lone Lady Catamount averaging double-figures, scoring an average of 14.3 points per game, including shooting a stout 34 percent from behind the arc. Caitlin Hollifield grabs a team-high 7.1 rebounds per contest. The Lady Catamounts are ninth in the league in scoring offense and field goal percentage.
The Series: Appalachian State and Western Carolina have met 85 times, the most meetings between ASU and any opponent on its schedule. Appalachian leads the series 51-34, with its last victory over the Lady Catmounts on January 4 at the Ramsey Center, snapping a nine-game losing streak to WCU.
In the last meeting, it was a lackluster effort by the Black and Gold, who could never quite shake a solid Western Carolina team, but were able to pick up a one-point win in Cullowhee. Previous to that contest, none of the nine-straight losses were close, as ASU was defeated by an average of 18.1 points in each of those games.
In the heated rivalry, Appalachian has not been successful in Boone, N.C. since the opening of the Holmes Center back during the 2000-01 season.
ASU is 2-7 all-time against Western Carolina in the Holmes Center, with its two wins coming during the inaugural campaign winning 79-72 and during the 2004-05 season.
Before the Mountaineers' win on January 4, Appalachian's last victory over Western Carolina came on February 24, 2005, capturing a 96-78 win.
The two teams first squared off during the 1970-71 season, with ASU losing the first meeting and not grabbing a win in the series until the 1972-73 campaign.
Appalachian's longest winning streak in the series is 27 games, while Western Carolina's is its most recent streak of nine-straight wins. In the rivarly, 45 of the 85 contests have been decided by double-digits with ASU earning wins in 30 of those games.
