ROCK HILL, SC - Freshman Michelle Butler directed a Lauren DeLellis pass into the net at the 57th minute to give Winthrop University a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State University Tuesday night at Eagle Field. After a scoreless first half and only one shot on goal, the Lady Eagles increased their intensity, resulting in Butler's goal. Head Coach Melissa Heinz was most pleased with the team's defensive effort. "Our backs are the ones that kept us in the game," Heinz said. "Carolyn Quarles, Jodi Kemp, Michael Sonefeld, and Erica Devine played phenomenal while Vanessa Kreider had some great saves. Our forwards also worked very hard, especially Lauren [DeLellis] and Ashley Hallmon." Appalachian had the most offensive chances, placing eight shots on goal compared to the Eagles three, but the Mountaineers were unable to capitalize on their chances. The win improves the Lady Eagles' record to 3-3-0 on the season. Winthrop travels to Nashville, Tennessee this weekend for a tournament. Appalchian drops to 2-3-0 and will host VMI Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
