Appalachian Men's Basketball Announces Staff Changes

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University men's basketball head coach Houston Fancher has announced the promotion of Matt McMahon to the position of associate head coach and named Tony Pujol and Ahmad Smith assistant coaches for the 2004-05 season. McMahon, who hails from Oak Ridge, Tenn., is entering his fifth year on the Appalachian coaching staff. He serves as the Mountaineers' recruiting coordinator in addition to duties in player development. A 2000 ASU graduate with a degree in marketing, McMahon enjoyed a successful playing career with the Mountaineers. A two year started, McMahon finished his career ranking seventh on the all-time list having drained 135 three-point baskets. During the 1998-99 season, McMahon ranked in the top 20 nationally in three-point field goal percentage and was named to the 1999 SoCon all-tournament team. In addition to his experience as an Appalachian assistant coach, he served as an administrative graduate assistant with the University of Tennessee during the 2001-02 campaign. "We are pleased to be rewarding Matt with this appointment as a statement of the positive impact he has had on our program over the past 8 years," Fancher said.?  "He is very deserving, and his contributions to ASU basketball can not be overstated.?  He continues to grow as a coach, and we are very fortunate to have him here with us." Pujol joins the ASU staff as an assistant coach after spending 13 years as a high school head coach in south Florida. Pujol spent the last nine years as the head coach of the Northwest Christian Academy in Miami, compiling an overall record of 250-46. His team made five Florida state final four appearances, winning titles in 1999, 2003 and 2004. He earned state coach of the year honors in each of his championship seasons. Previous to joining the Northwest staff, Pujol served as the head coach of La Progresiva Presbyterian School for three years, advancing to the state finals and earning coach of the year honors in 1995. Pujol is a 1989 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in business management. He was a multi-sport athlete at Sterling, playing basketball and baseball from 1985-89. He garnered baseball all-Conference honors in 1988 and '89. A Miami native, Pujol and his wife, Mayle, have two daughters: Kasey, 7, and Kristen, 4. "We are excited to be adding Coach Pujol to our staff," Fancher commented. "He had a tremendous run as a high school coach in Florida,?  and we feel will make a huge and immediate impact to our recruiting efforts as well as our player development. He is a great communicator and a tireless worker who was hungry for the opportunity to join the college ranks" Smith joins the ASU staff after a successful two-year playing career for the Mountaineers. A native of Yukon, Okla., Smith's duties include recruiting and day-to-day team operations. He graduated from Appalcahian in May with a degree in recreation management. During his playing career at ASU, he served as men's basketball's representative to the ASU Student-Athletic Advisory Board and was a two-year member of the SoCon Student-Athlete Advisory Council. From 1999-2001, Smith attended Cedar Valley Junior College, where he won a Division III national championship and averaged more than 17 points per game. He was named all-metro Conference, all-region and all-America, as well as being named to the NJCAA national all-tournament team. "We are pleased to be adding Ahmad as an assistant coach on our staff." Fancher said. "Ahmad was the prototype for what college student athletes should stand for.?  His character, desire and loyalty are but a few of the qualities that will make him an excellent coach."
