Frank Young prepares for his second season as Associate Head Coach at App State and his sixth season overall in the High Country after helping guide the Mountaineers to a program-record 27 wins, an outright regular-season conference championship for the first time since the 1978-79 season and an NIT appearance for the first time since 2006-07. Young has been a part of three postseason appearances in his five years at App State.Â
In 2023-24, Young played a large role in preparing the Mountaineers for each opponent. This led to App State leading the Sun Belt Conference in scoring defense, blocks, blocks per game, field-goal percentage defense and fouls per game. On the offensive side, Young's prowess in preparation guided the Mountaineers to the fourth-best scoring offense in the league and the second-best field-goal percentage in the conference.
After the 2022-23 season, Young was selected to participate in the prestigious 2023Â TopConnect Basketball Symposium. Young has also been invited to the Jay Bilas Coaches Leaderhip Program, participating in that in 2021.Â
During the 2022-23 season, Young helped lead the Mountaineers to a first-place conference finish in scoring defense (64.6) and field-goal percentage defense (.403). App State also earned its first Power Five win since 2014 at Louisville and saw five players earn new career highs in 2022-23.
In 2021-22, Young helped the Mountaineers to their third consecutive winning season. The Mountaineers went 19-15, and finished second place in the Sun Belt with 12 wins, the second-most conference wins in the Sun Belt era.Â
Young helped guide App State to a 12-5 start in its first 17 contests in 2020-21, which marked the best start for the program since 2006-07. The Mountaineers continued their success during the season, winning four games in four days and capturing the program's first Sun Belt Tournament title. App State's appearance in the NCAA Tournament was the first for the program since 2000.
In his first season at App State, Young played an integral role in the Mountaineers' 18 wins, which was the most for the program since 2009-10. The Black and Gold's turnaround of seven wins marked the most for the program since 2008-09.
Young comes to the High Country from Presbyterian, where he worked alongside head coach Dustin Kerns for two seasons in all facets of the program.
Before Presbyterian, he spent three seasons at North Florida as the director of operations, helping the Ospreys qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and the NIT in 2016. Young also was an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan during the 2013-14 season.
Young owns professional playing experience overseas, playing for EnBW Ludwigsburg (2007), Rotterdame Challengers (2008), Landstede Club (2008-09) and the Crailsheim Merlins (2010-11) over the course of five years.
In four seasons at West Virginia, he averaged 7.4 points in 125 career games. During his senior season, he set a school record for 3-pointers made (117) and led the Mountaineers to the NIT championship while earning tournament MVP honors.
Young graduated from West Virginia with a degree in marketing and earned his MB from Florida Institute of Technology in 2013.
