Azure Fernsler was named an assistant coach on February 11, 2022. She will begin her third season in the High Country in 2024.
Fernsler's second season saw remarkable improvement from the Mountaineer goalkeepers as the team posted the second-best goals-against average in the MAC, posting a 1.50 mark. Fernsler's tutelage led to App State's first ever MAC Goalkeeper of the Year Award as Addie Clark took home the award in 2023. Under Fernsler's leadership, the Mountaineers posted five shutouts and a 0.773 save percentage, which both led the conference in 2023.
In 2022, Fernsler's first year working with App State's goalkeepers, Fernsler helped lead the Mountaineers to a school record-tying 14 wins and its first MAC championship game appearance. The Mountaineers had the ninth-best scoring defense in the nation (1.09 goals per game) and ninth-highest save percentage (.785). Addie Clark was named All-MAC second team under Fernsler's first year of leadership. App State shut out 10 different opponents, which ranked the squad 10th in the nation.
During her senior year at Kent State as a goalkeeper, Fernsler was honored as the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year in the Mid-American Conference, leading the MAC with 104 saves and a save percentage of 80 for the fall season.
Fernsler's other playing accolades include being selected to the All-MAC first team, the NFHCA Division I Senior Team, and she was honored as the NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week in September 2021.
Fernsler coached youth field hockey players throughout 2021 with the Maryland Legacy, leading players between the ages of 10 and 19. She has also coached with Ultimate Defender Goalkeeper Academy, Wilson Youth Summer Field Hockey Camp, Kent State Field Hockey Camp and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
