BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball scored a run in five consecutive innings and got 6.1 scoreless from its bullpen to defeat Georgia Southern 7-3 and complete a weekend series sweep on Sunday at Smith Stadium.
It marks the first time in the 40-year history of the rivalry that the Mountaineers have swept a series from the Eagles.
App State (26-16, 13-8) has now won seven consecutive games for the first time since starting the 2023 season 7-0 and has won 12 of its last 14 outings to finish the weekend in a tie for second place in the Sun Belt standings.
Trailing 3-1 in the third, the Mountaineers grabbed the lead and never looked back.
Steven Smith began the inning with a single and
Riley Luft followed with a walk. Two batters later,
Kameron Miller walked to load the bases and
Jake Mummau followed with an RBI single.
Tommy Walker tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly, and
Drew DuPont followed with a go-ahead RBI double to put the Mountaineers in front, 4-3.
Ethan Wilson came out of the bullpen in the third inning and went on to work a season-high 3.1 innings, facing the minimum.
Logan Tibbett followed with a scoreless seventh and eighth, before passing the baton to
Jordan Fisher who finished out the ninth for his fourth save of the season. The bullpen faced just two over the minimum and did not walk a batter.
Charlie Evans got the Mountaineers on the board with an RBI single in the second and added an RBI groundout in the fifth. He finished with two hits as did Smith. The duo continues to lead the Sun Belt in batting on the season. Mummau also added a two-hit effort.
