SHELBY, N.C. – App State Baseball put the leadoff batter aboard in each of the final three innings but could not push the tying run across in a 3-2 loss to Wake Forest on Tuesday at Keeter Stadium, snapping the Mountaineers' seven-game winning streak.
Kameron Miller homered for the seventh time in his last seven games, a solo shot that was part of a two-run fourth inning that put App State (26-17, 13-8) ahead 2-1.
Wake Forest (29-17, 11-13) grabbed the lead back with a two-run single from Kade Lewis in the fifth inning.
Six App State pitchers combined to hold Wake Forest to just three runs in the ballgame, issuing only three walks against a Demon Deacon team that entered the matchup sixth in the nation in free passes.
Reyn Watson tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, stranding a pair in scoring position in the second inning.
Jake Beaty tossed a scoreless seventh and
Ethan Wilson struck out the side in the eighth. Wilson has not allowed a run in his last six appearances (7.1 IP).
Despite registering double digit hits in five of the last seven games, App State was limited to just two hits in the ballgame –
Riley Luft singled in the fourth and scored on a groundout.
The Demon Deacons scored first in the second inning on a solo home run from Andrew Costello. Neither team led by more than a single run in the contest.
App State will return to Sun Belt play this weekend when the team travels to Troy, Ala. To face the Trojans. App State enters the series in a tie for second place in the Sun Belt standings, one game ahead of Troy, with nine conference games remaining.
