BOONE, N.C. – Despite falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning, App State Baseball rallied, scoring runs in four of the first five frames to clinch its first series victory over Georgia Southern since 2013 with a 11-5 win on Saturday at Smith Stadium.
App State (25-16, 12-8) rattled off 19 hits in the ballgame and has now combined to score 104 runs across its last eight Sun Belt contests. Georgia Southern (12-30, 5-15) was held to just six hits in the ballgame.
Trailing 3-1 in the second inning,
Drew DuPont led off with a single to center field and
Jalen Seward followed with a two-run home run to left field for his third long ball of the season to tie the score.
The Mountaineers went ahead in the fourth inning. Seward lined a single off the wall in left field to begin the inning and two batters later
Steven Smith reached base on an infield single.
Riley Luft chopped a go-ahead single over third base to plate Seward.
Ethan Puig continued the rally with an RBI single to right and
Kameron Miller capped the scoring with a sac fly to put the Mountaineers in front 6-3, a lead they would not relinquish.
Gage Peterson earned his sixth victory of the season, striking out seven in six innings of work.
Max Tramontana finished off the effort on the mound with 2.1 innings, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts.
The offense plated three valuable insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI double from DuPont and a two-run double from
Steven Smith. They were among seven Mountaineers who finished with a multi-hit game.
The Mountaineers will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they send lefty
Tanner Nolan to the hill.
