BOONE, N.C. –
Tanner Nolan set the tone with a quality start on the mound, and the offense posted a six-run seventh inning to secure a series win over ULM with a 12-4 victory in the finale on Sunday.
Nolan went six strong innings for the Mountaineers (19-15, 7-8), allowing just two runs on three hits and picked up three strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season. Nolan retired 14 consecutive batters at one point and did not allow a base runner in the second through fifth innings.
Leading 2-1, App State pushed their lead to 6-1 with a four-run third.
Ethan Puig led off with a single and
Kameron Miller followed with a walk. Two batters later,
Jonathan Xuereb lined an RBI single and after a walk to
Tommy Walker,
Jake Mummau uncorked a two-run double to right field.
After the Warhawks (20-17, 8-7) cut into the lead to two with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, App State responded with a big home half of the seventh inning. The Mountaineers sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and scored six times. Mummau lined an RBI single to finish the ballgame with two hits and three RBI.
Charlie Evans continued the rally with an RBI triple. Evans reached base four times and finished a home run shy of the cycle, extending his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games. He finished the weekend with three triples. Evans also made a sensational catch in center field in the eighth.
App State tallied 10 hits in the ballgame, while drawing 11 walks and was hit by a pitch four times.
Jake Beaty and
Jordan Fisher each fired a scoreless inning to finish out the game.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday as the team travels to Western Carolina for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
