BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball's pitching staff allowed scoring in just one inning, but a three-run second held up for High Point, as the Panthers won 3-2 in a pitchers' duel Tuesday at Smith Stadium.
The App State (12-11, 2-4) bullpen combined to fire 7.1 scoreless innings in relief, while High Point (15-9, 4-2) gave up just one earned run and did not allow a base runner in the fourth through seventh innings.
The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of walks sandwiched around a hit batter. Following a mound visit, Panthers' starter Justin Silverstein was able to limit the damage to just a sacrifice fly from
Riley Luft, who drove in his 18th run in his last 12 games to give App State a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers answered in the second. Seojun Oh reached on an infield single to begin the frame and Jae Kohler followed with a looping double over first base to put two in scoring position. The Panthers drew even with an RBI groundout and then went ahead on back-to-back two out RBI singles from Frank Kelly and Willie Ponce.
App State pitching allowed just one hit after the second inning of play and just six hits for the game.
Reyn Watson fired 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out two before
Max Tramontana tossed a scoreless fifth inning, helped by a caught stealing from
Colton Denton.
Logan Tibett retired six of the seven batters he faced, striking out two, and stranding a leadoff walk in the seventh.
Jake Beaty picked up a strikeout and a double play ball to erase a walk in the eighth and
JJ Garcia worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
App State cut the deficit to one in the eighth.
Joseph Zamora reached on an error with one out, and two batters later came into score on an RBI single from
Charlie Evans.
App State will hit the road this weekend to face No. 11 Southern Miss in a three-game series, in the Mountaineers first trip to Hattiesburg. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
