NEW ORLEANS – App State men's basketball guard
Kasen Jennings has been named the Sun Belt Player of the Week after providing one of the most impressive performances by a Sun Belt player this season last Saturday against Troy by scoring a career-best 33 points with a career-best seven made 3-pointers.
The graduate guard's 33 points marked the first time that an App State player has recorded a 30-point game since Adrian Delph scored 39 points against Delaware on Nov. 22, 2021. It's the seventh-highest scoring game by a Sun Belt player this season.
Jennings becomes the second Mountaineer to earn the weekly honor this season, joining
Alonzo Dodd, who won the award on Dec. 16. It marks the first time that two different App State players have been named Sun Belt Player of the Week in the same season in the
Dustin Kerns era.
Saturday's effort followed an 18-point night at Southern Miss in the Mountaineers' 70-63 victory over the Golden Eagles. Jennings did most of his damage at the free-throw line on Thursday, as he shot 8-for-8 from the stripe, while also grabbing seven rebounds and totaling two steals in App State's first win at Southern Miss in program history.
For the week, the Atlanta native averaged 25.5 points, five rebounds, and 2.5 steals, while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 60 percent from behind the arc. He is now ranked as the No. 5 player in the Sun Belt Conference, according to KenPom.
Jennings and the Mountaineers will next hit the floor on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., as they take on the South Alabama Jaguars at the Holmes Center in what will be a matchup for second place in the league standings. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
