Mountaineers Host Georgia State for Pink Day & Alumni Day Matchup

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team will host Georgia State for Pink Day and Alumni Day on Saturday. Fans are encouraged to wear pink. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
There will be a t-shirt giveaway for the first 100 students in attendance. App State Women's Basketball alumni can register for the weekend's activities. Following the game there will be an autograph session with the team. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers started out strong against James Madison on Wednesday, leading the Dukes, 26-19 through the first 20 minutes of play, before falling short 60-53. With 13 points, senior Emma Smith marked her sixth game as App State's top scorer. She also drained 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Junior Daisia Mitchell registered her fourth game as App State's top rebounder, pulling down seven boards. She also dished out a team high four assists. 
 
The Mountaineers held the Dukes to seven offensive rebounds. The Dukes entered Wednesday's contest as one of the nation's top rebounding teams, averaging 11.0 offensive rebounds per game. App State also drained seven 3-point buckets to James Madison's three.  
 
Rankings Report
Averaging 10.8 and 10.1 points per contest, Mitchell and Smith remain App State's top scorers. Mitchell has netted double figures in 16 games, including five consecutive games from Jan. 23 to Feb. 7. Additionally, Mitchell leads the Black and Gold in steals, tallying 12 this year. 
 
Smith has recorded 13 games in double figures this winter. Averaging 6.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2 steals per game, Smith leads the Mountaineers in all categories. She remains second in the Sun Belt in assist to turnover ratio (1.55). 
 
App State continues to lead the SBC and ranks 29th nationally in 3-point percentage defense (27.1) and remains the league's leader in scoring defense (59.8). The Mountaineers also round out the conference's top five in field goal percentage (42.8%), rebound margin (4.6), assist to turnover ratio (0.89), assists per game (14.2), and defensive rebounds per game (25.7). Through 13 Sun Belt clashes, App State ranks third in scoring defense, holding league teams to 64.8 points per contest. 
 
Last Time Against Georgia State 
App State met Georgia State on Jan. 17 in Atlanta, falling short to the Panthers, 79-57. Smith netted a team-high 18 points and knocked down two of App State's five 3-pointers. Smith was also App State's top rebounder, grabbing six boards. Mitchell led the team Mountaineers with three assists. The Mountaineers held the Panthers to five offensive rebounds. 
 
Scouting Georgia State
Georgia State is 9-16 this season and 4-9 in conference play and are looking to snap a five-game losing streak, the latest loss being to Marshall (71-56) on Thursday. Since meeting the Mountaineers in January, the Panthers battled through a 78-75 overtime victory over South Alabama on Jan. 22 before falling to Troy (Jan. 24), Arkansas State (Jan. 29), Texas State (Jan. 31), and ULM (Feb. 4). 
 
Junior guard Crystal Henderson remains Georgia State's top scorer, averaging 16.5 points per contest. Henderson also leads the team in assists, dishing out an average of 4.0 per game. She ranks third in the Sun Belt in assist to turnover ratio (1.50), points (395), and points per game. Graduate student guard Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu remains Georgia State's top rebounder, averaging 5.6 boards per game. 
 
Georgia State rounds out the NCAA's top 40 and stands among the Sun Belt's top three in steals per game (11.8), turnover margin (6.16), turnovers forced per game (14.6), and made free throws per game (14.72). In Sun Belt-only play, Henderson ranks second in the league in free throw percentage (84.8%) and rounds out the top five leading scorers, averaging 16.6 points per conference clash. 
 
On the Horizon 
The Mountaineers will take on Coastal Carolina on Feb. 18 and James Madison on Feb. 21 in their last regular season road trip next week. Wednesday's 11 a.m. clash with Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. will mark the Mountaineers' fourth Education Day game this winter. App State will then travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for a rematch against JMU at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
