ATLANTA – App State Soccer conceded a goal in the second minute of play and despite quality scoring chances throughout the match – and a flurry of opportunities in the closing minutes – the Mountaineers were unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss at Georgia State on Thursday.
App State created four threatening opportunities in the final five minutes of play.
Reagan Hamilton had a shot to the bottom right corner saved in the 85th minute, and
Izzi Wood had one shot saved by a charging Georgia State goalkeeper and a goal waved off for offsides during that same span. Meanwhile,
Ellie Garrison nearly created a goal on a hustle play where she sprinted to block a clearance and had the ball ricocheted off her leg and just wide of the net.
The Mountaineers (4-4-1, 0-1-1) registered 14 shots and earned five corner kicks on the night.
After giving up a long-range goal from Georgia State's Brook Nelson just 71 seconds into the match, the Mountaineers immediately began searching for a counterpunch.
Olivia Simon hit the crossbar in the 10th minute of play with a sizzling left-footed effort, and
Reagan Sturgill narrowly missed a header on a free kick from
Kyli Switalski in the 21st minute of action. Wood also had a rocket right-footed attempt saved in the 38
th minute of play. The graduate student led App State with three shots and two on target, playing all 90 minutes of the match.

Shannon Studer,
Lucy Harrington and
Maddie Williams also did not come off the field.
Hanna Skogsfors made her second consecutive start in net and recorded a career-high six saves in the opening half of play. Her efforts were highlighted by a sprawling stop to prevent the Panthers from scoring on a rebound in the 14th minute.
Anna Claire Jacobi played the second half in goal and recorded another four stops.
The Mountaineers will host their first conference match of the season on Sunday when the team welcomes Louisiana to Boone. The match is set for 1 p.m. at The Valley and it will be broadcast on ESPN+.
