LYNCHBURG, Va. - On the final day of the Liberty Softball Invitational, App State Softball picked up their fourth win of the weekend in a 10-2 victory over Georgetown on Sunday. The Hoyas (8-5) scored their only two runs in the game's opening frame before the Mountaineers ran away with 10 straight runs to close the contest and pick up the win. App State (7-12) finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, falling only to No. 21 Liberty on Saturday.
Leah Gore and
Taylor Chumbley each posted their third home run of the season against the Hoyas.
Makayla McClain and
Macy Hamby joined them on the list of Mountaineer hitters with multiple RBI on the day.
Sophie Moshos took over to open the second inning and posted five straight hitless innings. She added seven strikeouts and allowed no runs in her six innings of relief work. Moshos allowed just one run in 13 innings of work this weekend and struck out 15 hitters.
How it Happened
McClain was the lone Mountaineer to reach base in the first inning. She walked and then took off to steal second base, but Georgetown worked around it to strand her. The Hoyas started quickly in their end of the opening inning, posting three hits and bringing a pair of runners home to open the game's scoring.
The Mountaineers made a pitching change before the second inning, bringing in
Sophie Moshos who put away the first three batters she faced.
App State's bats started rolling in the third inning.
Olivia Cook took first after being hit by a pitch.
Julia Girk followed her with a walk and McClain stepped up next and cracked a double down the left-field line, bringing both runners home in the process and tying the game 2-2.
Hamby kept things rolling with a single, driving McClain home for the go-ahead run to put the Mountaineers up 3-2. With Hamby waiting on first, Gore stepped to the plate and blasted her third home run of her freshman season. Moshos put away all three batters in the bottom half of the inning, and App State exited the third with a 5-2 lead.
A pair of walks from Cook and McClain did not result in scoring and Moshos reentered the circle in the bottom of the fourth inning. Barrett grabbed a pop out and turned it to first to register the double play, then Moshos struck out the final batter of the inning to send action to the fifth.
Taylor Chumbley carried on her hot streak, crushing a solo shot way out of left field to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 6-2.
Summer Simpson registered a base hit before turning back to Moshos in the circle. Moshos put away all three batters once again behind her fifth and sixth strikeouts of the contest, which kept App State's four-run advantage intact.
App State kept its momentum rolling into the sixth inning with back-to-back singles from McClain and Barrett. Hamby quickly took advantage of the scoring chance with a booming triple to send both runners home for an 8-2 lead. Chumbley dropped a single into the outfield to drive Hamby home and put the Mountaineers up 9-2. Moshos continued tossing heat, burying all three Hoya batters in the back end of the inning.
In the Mountaineers' final at-bat,
Grace Taylor walked before Girk placed them both in scoring position with a double. McClain followed by launching a sacrifice fly into the outfield to bring Taylor home for a 10-2 lead.
Moshos claimed her fourth win of the season after shutting out the Hoyas in the game's final frame. She posted seven strikeouts and allowed only two hits in her six innings of work in relief.
