Wrestling Hosts Mocs on Super Bowl Sunday

BOONE, N.C. — It's the first of three straight Sundays with a SoCon dual in Varsity Gym, as App State Wrestling will host longtime league rival Chattanooga at 3 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Mountaineers (6-3, 5-0 SoCon) will face the Mocs (4-8, 3-2 SoCon following a Friday shutout win at Davidson) as App State Wrestling alums are recognized during the annual Old Timers Match.

FAN INFO

Online tickets for Sunday's dual are $10 for general admission seats (plus service charge) and $15 (plus service charge) for a seat in the Premium Black section (general admission with a seatback in the Black areas of the new Premium section, surrounding the reserved Premium Gold seats). On match day, the cost to buy at the door is $15 for general admission and $20 for Premium Black tickets.

Home duals are streamed live on FloWrestling, which has a subscription model. If you don't have a FloWrestling account, you can purchase a monthly or annual subscription.

Varsity Gym does have a clear bag policy for visitors, and the Rivers Street Deck across from Varsity Gym is the most popular parking option for wrestling events, with fans entering the corner of the gym adjacent to the loading dock area off Rivers Street.

STORYLINES

App State and Campbell (4-0 in the SoCon heading into a Sunday doubleheader against Presbyterian and VMI) are the only SoCon teams with no league losses to date.

After splitting 10 matches at Bellarmine but prevailing 23-19 thanks to four bonus-point wins (one pin, two tech falls, one major decision), the Mountaineers earned bonus-point wins in each of the first eight matches of a 38-8 victory at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday. Those duals in Louisville, Ky., and Boiling Springs completed App State's road schedule.

Chattanooga wrestled tough in a 19-16 loss to Campbell on Jan. 19 and lost 19-18 last weekend at The Citadel, which posted a tech fall and major decision in the last two matches to erase an 18-10 deficit.

Chattanooga has a 36-26-1 lead in the all-time series, but App State has won the last nine meetings, with six of those being decided by seven team points or less.

There could be ranked matchups at two weights Sunday.

App State's Luke Uliano (No. 28 at 174 pounds) and Sergio Desiante (No. 20 at 174) split two matches last season, while Chattanooga's Blake Boarman (No. 17 at 133 pounds) is 1-0 this year against App State's Chad Bellis (No. 33 at 133).

The Mountaineers also have ranked wrestlers at 165 pounds (No. 7 Will Miller) and 197 pounds (No. 28 Carson Floyd). A standout at 157 pounds, Chattanooga's Noah Castillo (the 2022 SoCon Freshman of the Year and a 2023 SoCon finalist who faced App State's Jon Jon Millner in that final) has spent most of his career ranked.

The 2024-25 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station. The Chattanooga dual starts a cycle of Sunday matches at 3 p.m., as visits from Davidson (Feb. 16) and Campbell (Feb. 23) close out the regular season schedule.
