BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set to host Old Dominion on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Holmes Center. Thursday's game is a Double Points Day for Yikas Rewards members.
Last Time Out
App State clinched a 93-67 victory over Georgia State for its Play4Kay Pink Day game on Feb. 17. The Mountaineers improved to 14-12 on the season and 7-7 in Sun Belt action. Senior
Faith Alston led the Mountaineers with 24 points and a career-high 11 assists to mark her third double-double of the 2023-24 campaign. Fifth-year senior
Taylor Lewis pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and netted a career-high 18 points on the day. Sophomore
Alexis Black netted 16 points, knocked down 4-of-4 from the arc and the line as well as 4-of-6 from the field. Black and Lewis combined for nine of the Mountaineers' 14 treys against the Panthers.
App State shot 42.4% from the arc, 47.7% from the field, and 81.0% from the line. The Mountaineers also came within one of the program record for made 3-pointers in a game, which is 15 and was last met in the Black and Gold's Feb. 3 clash against Coastal Carolina.
Ranked Mountaineers
For the week of Feb. 12-18, Alston led the league and ranked sixth in assists and 11th in assists per game in the NCAA. She also ranked second in the SBC and amid the top-25 nationally for double-doubles. Black ranked second in the conference for 3-point percentage, while Lewis and Moffitt tied for third in the league in the blocks and blocks per game categories. App State tied with Marshall for the top spot in the Sun Belt and ranked fifth in the nation for 3-pointers per game. The Mountaineers also ranked second in the SBC for assists per game, field goal percentage, and scoring offense.
In Sun Belt-only action, Alston stands second for assists and fourth for scoring, while Moffitt ranks fifth for blocked shots. App State checks in at second for made 3-pointers, third for team 3-point percentage, and fourth for scoring offense. The Mountaineers round out the top-five for blocked shots and steals in SBC play.
For the season as a whole, Alston stands second in the assists category and rounds out the top-five in the scoring category. Carver stands third in the 3-pointers per game category and rounds out the top-five in the steals category. Moffitt ranks fourth for rebounding and rounds out the top-five for blocked shots. App State checks in at third in made 3-pointers and rounds out the top-five for scoring offense.
Last Time Against Old Dominion
The Mountaineers last met the Monarchs on Jan. 25, 2024 in Norfolk, Va. App State fell, 68-49, to ODU. Alston and sophomore Chaé Harris each netted 12 points. Fellow sophomore
Rylan Moffitt pulled down four rebounds while Lewis dished out three assists.
Scouting Old Dominion
Old Dominion is 18-7 on the season and 9-5 in Sun Belt play. The Monarchs enter Thursday's game off an 89-75 loss to Marshall on Feb. 17. Since meeting the Mountaineers, ODU picked up a pair of victories over Georgia State and Texas State before falling to Arkansas State on the road. The Monarchs recovered with a trio of victories over Troy, Kent State, and Coastal Carolina from Feb. 7 to Feb. 14.
En'Dya Buford is the Monarchs' top scorer, leading the team with 11.7 points per game. Buford is followed by Jordan McLaughlin, who averages 10.3 points per game. McLaughlin also leads the team in the assists category. ODU's top rebounder is Simone Cunningham, who averages 7.0 rebounds per contest. Cunningham also leads Old Dominion in the blocks shots category.
On the Horizon
The Black and Gold will close out its homestand on Feb. 24 with its Senior Day game against James Madison at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers will celebrate seniors
