BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set to host Georgia State on Saturday at 2 p.m. for its Play4Kay Pink Day game. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's program, which will take on Louisiana at 4:30 p.m. One ticket will get fans into both the women's and the men's games.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink for Saturday's game. The Chuck-A-Duck contest will return at halftime, which the first 200 students at the game will receive a free duck. A special Pink Day shirt will also be available for purchase on the concourse during the game.
Last Time Out
App State started its four-game homestretch on Thursday with its Education Day game against Marshall. Clashing for a second time this season, the Mountaineers fell to the Thundering Herd, 87-78, despite knotting the score six times and swapping the lead seven times. Sophomore
Alexis Black led the team with a career-high 24 points on the afternoon. Junior
Emily Carver netted 19 points and combined with Black for seven of the Mountaineers' 12 treys. Senior
Faith Alston netted 13 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Sophomore
Rylan Moffitt recorded her 16th game as the Mountaineers' top rebounder, recording 14. App State shot 41.4% from the arc, 43.5% from the field, and 70.6% from the line.
Ranked Mountaineers
In SBC action, Alston checks in at second in the league for assists (4.6 per SBC contest) and fourth in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per SBC contest. Moffitt rounds out the top-five for rebounds (3.3 per SBC game) and blocked shots (1.0 per SBC game). App State checks in at third in the league for team 3-point percentage and made 3-pointers in SBC play. The Mountaineers also rank fifth for scoring offense and steals.
On the season thus far, Carver stands second in the league for 3-pointers per game (2.4 per contest) and rounds out the top-five for steals (2.1 per contest). Moffitt ranks fourth in the SBC for rebounds, averaging 2.9 per game. Alston ranks third for assists (4.6 per game) and rounds out the top-five for scoring on the season, averaging 18.3 points per game. App State stands third in the SBC for made 3-pointers this season, totaling 178 treys.
Last Time Against Georgia State
The Mountaineers traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to clash with Georgia State on Jan. 13, 2024. App State fell short, 73-68, to the Panthers. Alston was the only Mountaineer to reach double-figures, netting 28 points. Alston accounted for three of the Mountaineers' seven treys and dished out a team-high seven assists. Black and fellow sophomore Chaé Harris each netted nine points, while Harris also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. The Mountaineers managed to hold Georgia State to four fastbreak points and nine second chance points. App State and Georgia State knotted the score eight times and swapped the lead nine times over the duration of the game.
Scouting Georgia State
Georgia State is 15-9 on the season and 9-4 in Sun Belt play. Shortly after meeting App State in January, the Panthers went on a four-game road-stretch that included victories over South Alabama and Georgia Southern as well as losses to Southern Miss and Old Dominion. On the prowl, the Panthers picked up three consecutive wins from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7, defeating James Madison, Georgia Southern, and Arkansas State in Atlanta. In their second MAC-SBC Challenge game, the Panthers fell to Miami (OH), 80-63. Georgia State enters Saturday's contest after a 73-62 road victory over James Madison.
Three Panthers average double-figures, led by Mikyla Tolivert, who averages 14.3 points per game. Tolivert also leads the team in the steals category. Crystal Henderson and Mya Williams average 11.8 and 11.0 points per contest, respectively. Henderson leads the team in the assists category, dishing out an average of 4.2 per contest. Alyssa Phillip is the team's top rebounder, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.
On the Horizon
App State's homestand continues with games on Feb. 22 and Feb. 24. The Mountaineers will host Old Dominion on Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Thursday's game will be a Yikas Rewards Double Points game.
The Black and Gold will then host James Madison at 2 p.m. on Feb. 24 for Senior Day. The Mountaineers will celebrate seniors
