Wrestling Hits Road for Two-State Doubleheader on Thursday

BOONE, N.C. — App State Wrestling heads toward the weekend with a pair of doubleheaders over a four-day span, including a marathon Thursday with SoCon duals in different states against Presbyterian and Davidson.

Unofficially at No. 26 in the NWCA Coaches Poll as the top team in the others receiving votes category, the Mountaineers (6-3, 3-1 SoCon) are scheduled to depart Boone at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday for the three-hour trip to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian (3-11, 0-4) at 1 p.m.

That dual will be held at the First Presbyterian Christian Life Center adjacent to PC's campus. Stay tuned to App State Wrestling's Facebook page for any updates on the possibility of live video from the dual.

After the Presbyterian matchup, App State will then travel two-plus hours to Davidson to face the Wildcats (1-13, 0-5) at 7 p.m. back in the Mountaineers' home state. That dual will be available to FloWrestling subscribers.

It likely will be a 17-hour day away from Boone (with nearly seven hours on the road) for App State, which was originally scheduled to face Presbyterian on Jan. 22. The date had to be changed due to a scheduling conflict.

Last year, the Mountaineers capped a home tripleheader by following a win against Campbell with a 43-0 shutout of Presbyterian and a 47-0 shutout of Davidson.

App State will next be in action at Varsity Gym on Sunday for a doubleheader against SoCon foe Bellarmine (at 11:30 a.m.) and No. 9 Cornell (at 1:30 p.m.).

The App State-Cornell matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and Big Red. App State already has faced No. 8 NC State in Boone and No. 13 Virginia Tech on the road this season.

Cornell will take a 10-3 record into a Friday night dual at NC State. The Big Red owns a 24-13 win against Virginia Tech, plus ranked wins against Missouri (No. 7), Little Rock (No. 18) and Pitt (No. 22). Its only losses occurred against Iowa State (No. 5), Ohio State (No. 6) and Lehigh (No. 15).

Bellarmine, which isn't eligible to compete at the SoCon Championship tournament as it completes its four-year Division I transition, is 3-3 in SoCon duals this season.

The Knights are 13-4 after starting the season with a 13-0 record that included eight wins against non-NCAA programs. That winning streak included a 3-0 start to the SoCon schedule, with victories against Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb and Davidson.

ticket to Sunday's doubleheader, the last of three premium events on App State's home schedule, costs $20 (it's free for App State students who show a student ID). The Rivers Street Deck across from Varsity Gym is the most popular parking option for wrestling events, with fans entering the corner of the gym adjacent to the loading dock area off Rivers Street.

Free of charge, fans not attending will be able to watch on the App State Wrestling Facebook page, the App State Athletics YouTube page or the Twitch.TV channel for App State Athletics.
