LAS VEGAS — Chad Bellis led the way for App State Wrestling at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday, reaching the final 12 in a 133-pound bracket with 11 ranked wrestlers thanks to an overtime win against 17th-ranked Brett Ungar from Cornell.
Bellis,
Kaden Keiser (149 pounds),
Luke Uliano (174 pounds) and
Carson Floyd (197 pounds) reached the night session of the prestigious double-elimination event.
Bellis' 2-2 record included a second-period pin of Northwestern's Massey Odiotti, the 4-1 victory against Ungar via a takedown with 1:12 left in the Sudden Victory period and two competitive losses against top-10 opponents. Bellis opened the tournament with a 6-3 loss to 10th-ranked Tyler Knox from Stanford, and he recorded a third-period takedown to pull within 8-6 before dropping a 10-6 decision against fourth-ranked returning All-American Dylan Ragusin from Michigan with a spot in the final eight at stake.
Bellis, Keiser and Floyd all posted pins in their second matches, after opening-round losses to top-11 opponents, and Uliano won two of his first three matches after beginning the event with a Round of 32 match.
Floyd lost 6-2 against No. 11 Zach Glazier from South Dakota State, pinned Cal Poly's Jared Priest in the first period and lost 7-2 against Purdue's Ben Vanadia.
Keiser lost 11-4 against No. 6 Anthony Echemendia from Iowa State, pinned Utah Valley's Tanner Frothinger in the first period and lost 4-1 against 29th-ranked Koy Buesgens from NC State, with a first-period takedown being the difference.
Uliano, like Bellis, finished 2-2 with a pair of losses to top-15 opponents: 7-1 against No. 3 Cade Devos from South Dakota State and 12-5 against No. 14 Jared Simma from Northern Iowa. Uliano opened the tournament with an 8-2 decision over Riley Davis from Wyoming and followed his loss to Devos with a 9-0 major decision over Maxwell Wilner from Arizona State.
