Mountaineers Fall to Miami in MAC Semifinals

OXFORD, Ohio. – The App State field hockey team fell to Miami by a score of 3-2 in overtime. 
 
The Mountaineers (11-8, 7-1 MAC) came into today's matchup looking to make the MAC Tournament Finals, but fell to the Redhawks (12-7, 7-1) halfway through the first overtime period.
 
Jillian Orcutt found the back of the cage twice in Oxford, giving the Mountaineers a chance to win it in extended time.
 
It was a tight game on both sides, with the Mountaineers tallying 13 shots to Miami's 14. The Mountaineers generated more penalty corners than the Redhawks, earning eight corners to their six.
 
How it Happened
 
1st: It was a tense start to the contest, with both teams tallying one shot and one corner apiece. Both teams were held scoreless heading into the second period.   

2nd: Both teams began to settle into the game in the second, with the Mountaineers totaling four shots on goal and earning three penalty corners. Miami got on the board first but was quickly followed up by Orcutt's third goal of the season. The Mountaineers went into the halftime break tied at one apiece with Miami.     

3rd: It was another tight period between the two teams, both getting one shot on goal. The Mountaineers won the corner battle in the period, earning one while keeping Miami out of the circle to earn any. Neither team scored after the halftime break, making the score 1-1 going into the final period of the semifinals.
 
4th/OT: The final period was a thrilling one, as Miami scored early in the period, giving the Redhawks a late lead. Orcutt found the back of the cage for the fourth time this season in the fourth, making the game tied at the end of regulation. The Redhawks held a lot of possession in overtime, before scoring the game winning goal halfway through the first overtime period. The Mountaineers fell to the Redhawks to a score of 3-2 in overtime.

It was an incredible season for the Mountaineers, as head coach Emily Dinsmore has two years under her belt, and two regular season titles to go along with it. The Mountaineers tallied a MAC-high seven shutouts during the regular season, along with being among the best in the conference in shots and shots on goal. Six Mountaineers garnered All-MAC recognition for the 2024 season, showing testament to the hard work that was put into their one-conference-loss season.
