GREENSBORO, N.C. – The App State women's basketball team fell short to UNC Greensboro, 68-55, on the road Saturday.
"I thought we played a really good first half, but lost the momentum going into halftime," said head coach
Alaura Sharp. "We showed some signs on both ends of the floor of the team we want to be. Our challenge right now is our consistency and our response to pressure. There has been some growth the last two weeks, we just have to keep chipping away."
Senior
Emily Carver netted a team high 16 points, draining 5-of-6 from the field. She also combined with senior
Asjah Inniss for four of App State's five treys, each contributing a pair. Inniss netted 12 points on the afternoon. Pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out four assists, senior
Zada Porter led the team in both categories.
App State (1-2, 0-0 SBC) scored 16 second-chance points to UNCG's (3-1, 0-0 SoCon) four. The Mountaineers and Spartans knotted the score four times and swapped the lead twice.
The Mountaineers got off to a strong start in the first quarter, shooting 53.3% from the field and 50% from the arc. After junior
Emily Hege tied things up at six all with a jumper, Carver gave the Mountaineers a 9-6 lead with a trey. The Black and Gold established a 12-point lead over the course of the quarter, building off three-point plays from graduate student Zoë McCrary and Carver, as well as layups from Porter, Hege, and senior
Mara Neira.
Leading 22-12 at the start of the second quarter, Hege drained a jumper and Inniss knocked down a 3-point bucket to extend App State's lead to 27-19. As the Spartans chipped away at the lead, a Porter layup and Carver trey kept the Mountaineers ahead, 32-27. App State entered halftime with a 35-31 lead after a freebie and layup in the paint from Carver.
App State maintained the lead for 15:32 in the first half and held UNCG to two second-chance points. Carver recorded 14 of her 16 points in the half.
The Mountaineers faced a scoring drought in the third quarter as UNCG found momentum. Inniss and McCrary managed to break App State's drought late in the period with a pair of jump shots to cut into UNCG's lead (48-39).
In the fourth quarter, junior
Elena Pericic and Inniss combined for 10 of App State's 15 points. The Mountaineers managed to hold UNCG to two points off turnovers and two second chance points, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans clinched the game, 68-55.
