Mountaineers Face Texas State in SBC Quarterfinal Matchup

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team continues its run at the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship on Friday as it takes on No. 2 seed Texas State in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. CT (8:30 p.m. ET) in Pensacola, Fla. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+. 
 
Last Time Out
No. 10 seed App State advanced to the quarterfinal after defeating No. 7 seed Louisiana, 51-38, in the second round of the tournament. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders and sophomore Emily Carver each netted 12 points, and freshman Chaé Harris scored 11 points. Harris drained 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Sanders shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Senior Taylor Lewis was responsible for five of the Mountaineers' six blocks for the night and matched Sanders for rebounds, as each pulled down six. Junior Faith Alston pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.
 
A determined Mountaineer squad held Louisiana to a mere four points in the first quarter and one 3-point bucket. App State also caused 18 Louisiana turnovers. 
 
Last Time Against Texas State
App State's first game of the new year had been against Texas State on Jan. 5. The Mountaineers fell to the Bobcats, 88-59, in San Marcos. Sanders led the team with 12 points and pulled down four rebounds. A'Lea Gilbert, who netted 10 points, registered a team-high eight rebounds. Alston dished out a team-high three assists. 
 
Scouting Texas State
Texas State, who opens play in the tournament with Friday's quarterfinal game, went 21-8 (13-5 SBC) in the regular season. After clashing with the Mountaineers on Jan. 5, the Bobcats recorded three separate three-game win streaks from Jan. 12-19, Feb. 4-11 and Feb. 18-24. 
 
All-Sun Belt selections Da'Nasia Hood and Kennedy Taylor are the Bobcats' top scorers, averaging 17.0 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. Hood is also Texas State's rebound leader, averaging 7.7 per contest, while Taylor leads the team in assists (averaging 6.1 per game) and steals (averaging 1.8 per game). 
 
Up Next 
The winner of Friday night's quarterfinal game will advance to Sunday's semifinal matchup, where they will play the winner of the (11) Arkansas State vs. (3) Southern Miss game. The tournament is being held from Feb. 28 to Mar. 6 and its champion will earn an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament.
