BOONE, N.C. -- App State softball is set to host Marshall for a trio of contests at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium this weekend. This marks the beginning of Sun Belt play, as well as the home opener for the Mountaineers.
Due to weather changes, the teams are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
All games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available to follow along.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (15-6, 0-0 SBC)
- The Mountaineers have won six of their last seven, including a 4-1 showing at the MTSU Invitational last weekend. App State snapped Southern Illinois' 10-game winning streak before sweeping Green Bay and closing out the weekend with a victory over Western Illinois.
- Preseason All-Sun Belt selection Kayt Houston has started strong in the first half of the season, batting .419 with 31 hits, 17 runs, seven doubles, 13 RBI and a home run.
- The Mountaineers have posted a first-inning run in nine of their last 14 contests, going 9-0 this season when they score in the opening frame.
- The Black and Gold currently hold the fourth-best record in the league.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERING HERD (21-3, 0-0 SBC)
- Marshall has won its last 11, posting the best record in the conference during its first year as a member of the Sun Belt.
- Sydney Nester leads the SBC in shutouts (4) and strikeouts (122). Her strikeout count is fourth nationally.
- Autumn Owen is seventh in the country with a .507 batting average. Her 34 hits are second-most in the league behind only teammate, Alex Coleman, with 36. Both hit totals rank top-25 nationally.
- The Herd have won five of seven matchups against App State, though the Mountaineers have won the last two. App State most recently defeated Marshall, 2-1, on Feb. 24, 2019.
UP NEXT
App State will continue its homestand with a pair of midweek contests against North Carolina and North Carolina A&T on Tuesday and Wednesday.
