Mountaineers Set for Noon Battle Against Coastal Carolina

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team's road stretch continues as it heads to Conway, S.C. to take on Coastal Carolina at noon on Saturday. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell to Marshall, 72-64, in their second SBC meeting on Feb. 2 in Huntington, W.Va. App State jumped to an early 11-0 lead in the first period, steadily maintaining it through the second. Marshall began to catch up in the third and overtook the lead for the only lead change of the game in the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers faced a scoring drought. 
 
Echoing last week's game against Louisiana, junior Faith Alston and sophomore Emily Carver led the Mountaineers, this time with Alston scoring 17 points and Carver netting 16. The pair each drilled four treys and both nabbed two steals. Alston also recorded six rebounds and a team-high six assists. Thursday's game marked the second game Alston has been the Black and Gold's top scorer this season, and was the seventh consecutive game Carver has netted double figures. 
 
Redshirt junior A'Lea Gilbert pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, marking her fifth game and second consecutive game as top rebounder for the Black and Gold. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders scored eight points, and is now 22 points away from her 1,000th collegiate career point. She currently has 978 points combined from her time at La Salle and App State. 
 
Around the Conference
Carver remains the leader of the league in 3-point percentage (.500) and made 3-pointers per game (averaging 3.7 per game) in league play and moves to the top spot for 3-pointers made per game for the season.  She also moved up to fourth in the SBC for field goal percentage (.487) in conference play, and remains fifth in the league for scoring, averaging 16.9 points per SBC game. 
 
App State remains the SBC's leader in 3-pointers made, averaging 7.6 per game for the season and 8.4 per game in Sun Belt-only play. The Black and Gold also moves up to the top spot for team 3-point percentage (.351) in league action. The Mountaineers stand fourth in the league for steals made in conference play and remain fifth in the league in scoring for the season as well as league-only play. 
 
Last Time Against Coastal Carolina
On Jan. 21, the Mountaineers defeated Coastal Carolina, 81-74 in Boone. Four Mountaineers scored double-figures, led by Carver. The game against the Chanticleers marked Carver's fourth consecutive where she scored over 20 points and drained at least five 3-pointers. Carver netted a career and team-high 27 points. Freshman Alexis Black recorded 18 points. Black, graduate student Brooke Bigott, and Sanders helped the Black and Gold to a 90.5% free throw percentage, all three shooting perfectly from the charity stripe. 
 
Scouting Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina is 10-12 (5-6 SBC) this season. Since their last meeting with the Mountaineers, the Chanticleers upset JMU on Jan. 26 before falling to ODU (Jan. 28) and Arkansas State (Feb. 2). CCU is 8-3 in the HTC Center. 
 
Aja Blount remains the Chants' top scorer with an average of 15.9 points per game. Blount boasts a field goal percentage of .498 and a free throw percentage of .889. She also leads the team in rebounds, pulling down an average 8.0 per contest. Leading CCU in the assists category is Arin Freeman, who averages 4.2 per game. 
 
UP NEXT 
The Mountaineers return to Boone to host Georgia State on Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. for Education Day. App State will then take on Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. on Feb. 11 for their Pink Game.
