Mountaineers Prepare for Trio of Opponents at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- App State softball is set to compete five times at UNCW this weekend with games against Georgetown (x2), the hosting Seahawks (x2) and Eastern Kentucky.

Weekend Schedule:
2/24: App State vs Georgetown, 2 p.m.
2/24: Eastern Kentucky vs Georgetown, 4:30 p.m.
2/24: UNCW vs Eastern Kentucky, 7 p.m.
2/25: App State vs Georgetown, 10 a.m.
2/25: Eastern Kentucky vs Georgetown, 12:30 p.m.
2/25: UNCW vs App State, 3 p.m.
2/25: UNCW vs Eastern Kentucky, 5:30 p.m.
2/26: App State vs. Eastern Kentucky, 9 a.m.
2/26: UNCW vs. Georgetown, 11:30 a.m.
2/26: UNCW vs App State, 2 p.m.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (3-3, 0-0 SBC)

  • App State split its four contests at the Pinnacle PC Invitational. The Mountaineers shut out IUPUI and Seton Hall and held undefeated Presbyterian to its lowest-scoring game of the season in a 1-0 loss.
  • Delani Buckner and Kaylie Northrop pitched all seven innings in the two shutouts. Northrop struck out a career-high eight batters in her first start of the season against Seton Hall.
  • Kayt Houston and Sidney Martin have combined for 13 hits through their first six contests, leading the Mountaineers who have totaled 38. Martin has posted both a triple and a home run.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS (2-5, 0-0 BIG EAST)

  • Georgetown went 2-2 at the Hampton/Norfolk State Tournament, defeating Bucknell and Wagner before the team fell to Lehigh and Norfolk State.
  • Pitcher Brooke Plonka was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll for her play in the tournament, taking the win over Bucknell from the circle after going 3.2 innings in the Hoyas' 9-5 victory. Against Wagner, Plonka shut out the Seahawks (6-0). She struck out 11 batters and allowed only three hits.
  • Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Hoyas.

SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS (2-7, 0-0 CAA)

  • UNCW is looking to rebound after dropping its last six to No. 11 Virginia Tech, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Morehead State.
  • Janel Gamache earned CAA Player of the Week honors for hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a double, triple and home run to go with three walks and two RBI in UNCW's season-opening tournament.
  • UNCW leads the all-time series against App State 8-6 ahead of this weekend's two-game slate. The Mountaineers won three out of four against the Seahawks in 2021.

SCOUTING THE COLONELS (7-3, 0-0 ASUN)

  • Eastern Kentucky won three out of five at the Bob Heck Classic, defeating Rhode Island twice, splitting a pair of games against Georgia State and falling to Purdue Fort Wayne.
  • Vianna Barron was named the ASUN Player of the Week at the start of the season after going 9-of-16 (.563) from the plate with three home runs, one triple, two doubles and 10 RBIs.
  • This will be the sixth meeting between App State and Eastern Kentucky in a series that the Colonels lead 5-0.

UP NEXT
App State will compete in its third nonconference tournament at Tennessee next weekend. The games will run from Mar. 3-5 and the Mountaineers could play up to five games against Belmont, Jacksonville State and the hosting Volunteers.
