Mountaineers Host JMU for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Game

BOONE, N.C. — The App State women's basketball team is set to host Sun Belt Conference co-leader James Madison in its penultimate regular season game Wednesday. The 6:30 p.m. clash, which will be available to stream on ESPN+, is also App State's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion game.
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell 73-66 to Troy on Feb. 18. App State led until late in the fourth quarter against a team that entered the game tied for top spot in the SBC. Three Mountaineers scored in double figures, led by sophomore Emily Carver and redshirt senior Janay Sanders, who netted 14 points apiece. The Black and Gold held the Trojans to four made 3-pointers.

Carver has been the top scorer for App State in nine of 27 games and has scored in double figures in 17 games this season. Sanders has been the top scorer in 11 games and has netted double figures in 20 games.  
 
App State is seven treys away from setting a new program record for made 3-pointers in a season. The Mountaineers have a total of 209 made 3-pointers this season. The program record, set during the 2018-19 season, is 215.

Sanders and graduate student Brooke Bigott earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition on Tuesday. 
 
Around the Conference
Carver continues to hold strong with her spot as the league's leader in 3-point percentage (45.5) and made 3-pointers per game (3.4). She ranks ninth in the SBC for scoring in league games.

Junior Faith Alston is seventh in the Sun Belt for assists in conference play and ninth for the whole season. Sanders rounds out the Sun Belt's top 10 for scoring this season and is also in the top 10 for steals in conference-only action. 
 
In the team stats, App State remains in the top spot for made 3-pointers for the season and conference play.  The Mountaineers remain second in the SBC in team 3-point percentage in conference play (33.5) and continue to stand fourth for the entire season (30.6).  App State is third in the conference for steals made in SBC play and fifth in scoring for the season overall.
 
Last Time Against James Madison
The Black and Gold faced JMU for the first time in conference play and for the first time since 1991 on Jan. 12 in Harrisonburg, Va. The Mountaineers bowed to the Dukes,73-64. The game had been the third in a four-game road stretch that kicked off the new year. Carver was the Mountaineers' top scorer, netting 22 points, drilling five 3-pointers. Alston scored 15 points while dishing out four assists.
 
Scouting James Madison
James Madison (22-6 overall) is currently tied for the top spot in the Sun Belt with Troy, as both teams have 12-4 conference records.

After clashing with App State on Jan. 12, the Dukes picked up one additional win for a 13-game win-streak that had spanned from Nov. 23 to Jan. 14, before Georgia Southern snapped the streak on Jan. 19 in Harrisonburg.

The Dukes then edged past Troy, 80-79, before winning one of four in a road stretch that lasted from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4. JMU is coming to Boone on a four-game winning streak, having defeated Louisiana and Arkansas State in Harrisonburg before venturing out to claim victories over Texas State and Old Dominion. 
 
Kiki Jefferson, Kseniia Kozlova and Peyton McDaniel are the top scorers for the Dukes, with each averaging double-digit points per game. Jefferson leads the crew with an average of 18.7 points per game and also leads the team in rebounds at 8.3 per game. Caroline Germond leads the Dukes in assists, dishing out 3.8 per game.

App State will close out the regular season by hosting ULM on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Mountaineers will also honor their graduating class on Senior Night.
